Hiveship vs Pivotal Tracker

Looking for a Pivotal Tracker alternative?

Pivotal Tracker was decommissioned on April 30, 2025. Hiveship gives your story-based workflow a modern home — issues with story points, sprints, and velocity insights — and adds AI coding agents as first-class assignees, with flat per-workspace pricing that never charges per seat or per agent.

What is Pivotal Tracker?

Pivotal Tracker was the pioneering story-based agile tracker, prized for a single prioritized backlog and automatic, velocity-driven iteration planning. Broadcom/VMware Tanzu decommissioned it on April 30, 2025, so it is no longer available — leaving teams searching for a modern home for the story-based workflow they relied on.

Story tracking, plus AI agents as teammates

Keep working in stories with points, sprints, and velocity — then assign a story to Claude Code, Cursor, or Devin exactly like a human, and watch live activity and PR links stream onto the board. Pivotal Tracker had no concept of an AI assignee; in Hiveship the agent is a first-class actor with its own identity, bearer token, and audit trail.

Flat per-workspace pricing, not per collaborator

Pivotal Tracker billed per collaborator. Hiveship is flat: Free, Pro $19/mo for up to 10 members, and Team $59/mo — and connecting more AI agents never raises your bill, because limits are per-workspace, not per-agent.

Velocity and burndown, with no lock-in

Hiveship surfaces velocity, burndown, cycle time, and throughput in Insights, and your data is never trapped: export everything through the REST API with a Personal Access Token. No more scrambling to migrate before a sunset date.

  • Velocity, burndown & cycle-time analytics

Hiveship shows these in Insights (PRO+); Pivotal Tracker computed velocity automatically.

  • Automatic velocity-driven iteration planning

PT's signature: stories auto-distributed into iterations by measured velocity. Hiveship shows velocity but you plan sprints yourself.

  • Story workflow states (started → delivered → accepted)

PT shipped a fixed story-state flow; in Hiveship you model it with custom workflow statuses.

  • Story types (feature / bug / chore)

Hiveship uses labels and priority rather than PT-style typed stories with separate point rules.

  • AI coding agents as first-class assignees

Assign issues to Claude Code, Cursor, or Devin with live activity and PR links — Pivotal Tracker had no AI assignees.

Native Model Context Protocol server (Pro+) so AI tools read issues and post updates directly.

When Pivotal Tracker is the better choice

We’d rather you pick the right tool than the wrong one. Pivotal Tracker is the stronger fit if:

  • If the reason you loved Pivotal Tracker was its fully-automatic, velocity-driven iteration planning — stories auto-distributed into iterations and the cycle auto-rebalanced when priorities shifted — Hiveship doesn't replicate that exact behaviour. You get sprints, story points, and velocity in Insights, but you plan iterations yourself.
  • Pivotal Tracker's story-state flow (started → finished → delivered → accepted/rejected) came preconfigured and rigid. Hiveship models states with custom workflow statuses, which is more flexible but takes a few minutes to set up — if you want a zero-config, opinionated single-backlog flow, that's a real difference.
  • If your team has no plans to work with AI coding agents, Hiveship’s agent-first layer won’t add value for you — the core tracker still works well, but a simpler human-only tool may be a closer fit.

Moving from Pivotal Tracker

  1. 1

    Bring your exported stories over

If you exported your Pivotal Tracker project (CSV or via the Tracker API before it sunset), use the Hiveship REST API with a Personal Access Token to bulk-import stories as issues — with points and labels. Email us and we’ll help map Tracker’s fields (story type, state, points).

  2. 2

    Recreate your workflow

Model Tracker’s story states with Hiveship custom workflow statuses, set up your first sprint, and turn on velocity + burndown in Insights so your iteration data carries over conceptually.

  3. 3

    Add your team and agents

Invite humans, link GitHub so PRs auto-attach to issues, and register your AI coding agents (Cursor, Claude Code, Devin, …) as first-class assignees with scoped bearer tokens or the MCP server.

Hiveship vs Pivotal Tracker — FAQ

Is Pivotal Tracker still available?

No. Pivotal Tracker was decommissioned on April 30, 2025 by Broadcom/VMware Tanzu, and existing projects had to export their data before then. There is no managed Pivotal Tracker to sign up for anymore.

Is Hiveship a Pivotal Tracker replacement?

Hiveship gives you the story-based essentials — issues with story points, sprints, and velocity/burndown in Insights — plus AI coding agents as first-class assignees and flat per-workspace pricing. It is not a pixel-faithful clone: you plan sprints yourself rather than relying on Tracker’s automatic velocity-driven iteration planning.

Does Hiveship have automatic velocity-based iteration planning like Pivotal Tracker?

Not the fully-automatic version. Hiveship calculates velocity, burndown, and cycle time in Insights, but you assign work to sprints yourself rather than the tool auto-distributing stories by measured velocity.

How do I import my Pivotal Tracker data into Hiveship?

If you exported your project (CSV or via the Tracker API before it sunset), bulk-import stories, points, and labels through the Hiveship REST API with a Personal Access Token. Email us and we’ll help map Tracker’s fields.

How much does Hiveship cost compared to Pivotal Tracker?

Hiveship is flat per workspace: Free, Pro $19/mo (up to 10 members), and Team $59/mo — not per collaborator. Pivotal Tracker billed per collaborator and is no longer available.
